Additions for the New Year (and the end of the old one)

I seem to only have time to post cards when I get a bunch of them scanned at once, but I guess that's better than nothing. Here's some of my pick-ups from back in December, as well as some from early January as well. So far late-January and early-February have been epic in terms of finally tracking down a few hard to find 1990's inserts and parallels, and I can't wait for them to finally arrive. Stay tuned in the coming weeks, once I get them all in hand, for a post highlighting my newest additions.

Random Pics of New Rickey's

I haven't had much time to put a decent post together recently, but I have scanned some of the newer cards I've picked up. The commentary will be lacking, but if anyone has a question on any of them, please don't hesitate to ask!

1992 Yankees WIZ All-Star and Yankees of the 80's

After over 20 years, I was finally able to obtain the final piece to this Yankees oddball sets from the 1980's!

These sets were given away as sheets of cards by the WIZ (a New York/New Jersey electronics chain) during Yankees home games in 1992. The All-Star set was one of 6 different sets given away in 1992, which also included a Hall of Fame set, as well as sets featuring stars of the '50s, '60s, '70s, and '80s. These mini cards feature perforated edges, and are only about 2" wide by 3 1/4" tall.

The back of the cards were pretty basic, just indicating the set that it was from, as well as the years during which Rickey played on the team.

This is the card that I was finally able to get my hands on, and when I first looked at it, I thought I'd made a mistake, and bought the wrong one. The "Yankees of the 80's" set does look exactly like the All-Star set, but is just missing the logo in the upper left hand corner.

Although similar to the back of the All-Star cards, this set also includes some very brief statistics.

As everyone knows, I love all things oddball, especially those from the 80's and 90's. It's nice to know that I can finally cross this one off my list, and allow it to replace the placeholder in the binder that has been there for so long!

2008 Newark Bears Choice Team Set

It's always fun to find out that there's card out there that you didn't know existed, and then try and track it down yourself. In regards to Rickey cards, that doesn't happen to me very often, but it did with the card below.

This card was part of a 2008 team set put out by the Newark Bears, who Rickey played for during parts of the 2003 and 2004 seasons. At the end of the set were a couple of black & white cards that featured famous Newark Bears alumni. I'm not sure how it managed to allude me for the past two years, but I had never even seen one until someone offered to sell me the card in an e-mail about a month or so ago.

The Newark Bears have been on pretty shaky financial grounds the past few years, and were bought out of bankruptcy by new management in 2009. I don't know the print run on the 2008 sets, but I don't believe many of them were produced, and have heard that any remaining sets might have been destroyed when the new management took over.

Here's a list of all of Rickey's other Minor League cards (at least, until another one pops up that I didn't know about):

1977 Modesto A's
1979 Ogden A's
1989 Modesto A's
2003 Atlantic League All-Stars
2003 Newark Bears
2004 Newark Bears
2008 Newark Bears

1988 Fleer Sluggers / Pitchers "Baseball's Best" Box Bottom

During the late 1980's, Rickey was quite frequently included as one of the players selected to be included on the panel of cards on the bottom of hobby and retail store boxes. Most of these are fairly common, with some of the O-Pee-Chee Canadian boxes being a little harder to find. But, none are as rare as the 1988 Fleer Sluggers/Pitchers (also known as "Baseball's Best) box bottom. After searching for over 20 years, I finally came across one of these!

Here's a close-up of the card in question. I'm still looking for a nice "cut" version of the card, as the one that I picked up is still attached to the entire display box. Until I came into contact with a few collectors through this blog, I wasn't even sure if this card actually existed!

Here's what the complete panel looks like. I really want to attempt to "free" Rickey from the rest of the panel, but I know I won't be able to cut it accurately enough for my liking.

Until I received these cards in the mail, I'd never actually seen the back of one of them before. The Rickey is one of 6 cards in the set,and is number C-2.

Here's the top to the Sluggers /Pitchers sets display case, which were only available in large retail /drug stores, and contained 24 individual box sets. As a result, most of the display boxes were thrown out, and very few have survived today. Plus, since they were sliding around on store shelves, most of the panels include some surface wear, as well as various mounts of creasing.

The front panel of the boxes actually features a nice image of some of the superstars of the time. Although Rickey is not included, Don Mattingly, Mark McGwire, and Roger Clemens are some of those represented.

Cards from a Rickey Collector

Through a purchase that I made on eBay, I recently came into contact with another Rickey collector who'd been out of the hobby for a little while. We've since had a few nice Rickey-related conversations, as it's always fun discussing random errors and variations that only a die hard collector would really enjoy. In the first trade that we completed (another one is in the mail, while more will definitely be forthcoming) I was able to knock off quite a few cards from my want list. These are all "older" cards, that I've been seeking out for quite some time now.

1991 U.S. Playing Cards All-Stars Silver 11H -- I had the 1990 Silver, but was pretty excited to finally track down the 1991!

1995 Blue Jays U.S. Playing Cards 3S & 11H -- These are not the most expensive cards out there, but I just never found them at a reasonable price. Along with the 1991 Silver above, I think I now have all of the Rickey playing cards that have been produced.

1996 Select Certified Certified Blue #70 -- It's always nice to knock a mid-90's parallel off of the want list.

1997 Circa Rave #341 #/150 -- One of Rickey's earliest serial numbered parallels. now I just need to track down the 1996 Rave!

1998 Pacific Invincible Team Checklists #1 -- For some reason, Rickey's actually on the back of this checklist insert.

1998 Ultra Platinum Medallion 431 #/98 -- I didn't think I'd ever get ahold of one of these Platinum parallels. Back before eBay got real big, these were impossible to find, and they are not much easier now.

1999 Paramount Red #150 -- I'm pretty sure all of the Red parallels were retail exclusives, and I'm slowly picking them all up.

2002 Donruss Elite STAR #125 -- Basically a glorified base card.

2002 MLB Showdown #273

2002 MLB Showdown Pennant Run #59

2002 Topps Ten Die Cuts AS APP #115 -- For a fairly low end set, the die-cut parallels are pretty nice looking.

2009 Triple Threads, and a 2010 Topps Preview!

Based on the events of the past week, it's pretty clear that Rickey has once again signed an agreement with Topps to have his cards included in their myriad of sets. As of earlier this year, Rickey did not have an agreement with either Topps, Upper Deck, or Donruss, but that's obviously changed.

Although it's not scheduled to be released until tomorrow, 2009 Triple Threads started to hit eBay last night, which included the awesome cards below!

I have mixed feelings about Rickey's inclusion in Triple Threads, as although the cards are great, they are going to quickly rise out of my price range.

The last mainstream set in which Rickey was included was 2007 Triple Threads, which contained a total of 35 different Rickey cards. Of these, 10 were 1/1's, and 8 were serial numbered to less than 10 copies, which definitely makes them pretty hard to acquire! Of the remaining cards, 13 were numbered between 10 and 40, and only 4 (including the base card), had a print run of 99 copies or greater.

I can't complain, and I definitely love having new Rickey's to chase after, but will just have to focus on the ones that will be easy (financially) to acquire.

In other news, Beckett has released a preview of 2010 Topps, which will also contain new cards of Rickey!

The "big" news is the announcement of buybacks of over 1 million Topps base cards to be reinserted in packs next year. I'm not sure how I feel about this, as I don't know how many people will be happy about acquiring some random 1986 Topps, but I'm sure Topps will be promoting it widely.

I did appreciate that there was a Rickey card included in the promo poster above. His 1980 Topps rookie card is at the top of the poster, to the left of the Million Card Giveaway logo. Also included with the Beckett preview was a checklist of the set, which of course includes a few choice Rickey's!

The Cards Your Mother Threw Out

Relic
PPR-RHE Rickey Henderson

Hat Logo Relic
MHR-110 Rickey Henderson

MHR-111 Rickey Henderson

MHR-112 Rickey Henderson

MHR-113 Rickey Henderson

I'm definitely looking forward to the "Cards Your Mother Threw Out" set, as I always enjoy it when Rickey is included as part of an insert set, and not just as a parallel of a base card. The relic card should also be obtainable, while I'm pretty sure the hat logo relics will be 1/1's, or at least have a minuscule print run, which will make them hard to even see, let alone obtain.

It seems that every day brings even more surprises from 2009 Topps Update & Highlights!

First, I found out that Rickey was included a an SP in the set, and then two different relics showed up on eBay. Now, Beckett has updated their official checklist with the cards that will be included in the now common Wal-Mart and Target blasters and "cereal" boxes. The complete list is included below. Topps Updates & Highlights Relics!

As more boxes of Updates & Highlights are busted, more surprises continue to emerge! I was excited enough about the variation that surfaced yesterday, but there are now relic cards as well!

This jersey card is numbered to only 20 copies, which will make it a bit difficult to acquire, but it features an awesome picture of him on the A's.

The bat card is also limited to only 20 copies, with this one showing him on the Yankees. I can't wait to see what other surprises might pop up!

Once again, if anyone happens to pull these cards, please let me know!

A New Rickey Card is Released!

For the first time since I've been blogging, a new mainstream Rickey Henderson card has been produced! Other than a couple of horrific 1/1 cut signatures from Tri-Star (see here), Rickey hasn't had a card released since 2007, and there definitely hasn't been one that I had any chance of obtaining. But, that has all changed!

When perusing eBay last night I was shocked to see that Rickey was included as one of the variations in the newly released 2009 Topps Updates and Highlights (it's card UH318). I've seen a couple of his cards posted, all with him as a Yankee. Based on the other variations that have surfaced, most other players have two variations, featuring them on two different teams. Here's hoping that he's featured on the A's in the other one!

Of course, if anyone pulls any Rickey cards, please let me know! I'm sure we can work out something in trade. I haven't followed the variations closely, but do they have a gold parallel as well?

Rickey Cards from Cooperstown

I didn't bring the printed version of my Rickey checklist along with me to Cooperstown, as I wasn't sure what kind of cards I'd find when I got over there, and it wasn't worth carting around cross country. So, I'd have to go from memory, and hope I wasn't too far off.

I returned from Cooperstown with three cards, only one of which I actually needed. But, I still considered it a success, especially since they were only $0.50 each. There were quite a few shops with Rickey cards set aside, but most of them were commons from the 80's and early 90's, with price tags far exceeding their actual values.

2003 Playoff Portraits National Red #142 - This card isn't listed in my Beckett checklist, but from what I can find out online, the red parallel was released at the National card convention. I knew that I didn't have this variation, and it was the only card that I actually added to the collection.

1998 Pacific Paramount Red #80 - I actually thought that I might need this one as well, but I did end up having it. The red parallels were released only in retail packs, and are now pretty hard to come by. If anyone's interested, this one is now up for trade.

1991 All-Time Stolen Base King Oddball - This is an oddball card that I had just picked up a few weeks prior, but since I knew it wasn't all that common, I figured it would be a good pick up for trading in the future. The card is "limited" to 10,000, with this copy being number 8,939. I actually like the number on this one, as it corresponds to the 939 steals that the card is commemorating.

Although it's not your typical "card" this is my favorite card acquisition of the weekend, and it's definitely going into my collection. For anyone attending induction weekend, I would definitely recommend buying a membership to the Hall of Fame, as it was definitely worth the cost, and you're left with a really cool souvenir. I had purchased a membership ahead of time, and received a Billy Williams card in the mail, But, at the last minute, they decided to produce a special Rickey membership card, which the employees of the membership department were nice enough to update for me.
